A film still featuring a man walking.
Kamal Aljafari and a still from his film Eat.

Filmmaker Kamal Aljafari explores the intersection of fiction and reality in his work, challenging the notion that images are simply something you "create."

Join Berlin-based Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari as he explores the intersection of fiction and reality in his work, delving into the impact of his decade-long cinematic practice. Aljafari’s latest exploration stems from his film K.— a story about a man’s attempt to understand the mysterious death of his uncle, M., who spent 25 years in a mental hospital.

Aljafari will discuss how his work challenges the notion that images are something you create, arguing instead that images are found. Drawing on his unique cinematic approach, Aljafari will share insights into the power of images, memory, and the search for truth within the context of displacement and identity. Known for his distinct style, Aljafari’s work has been featured in a number of prestigious festivals, and his most recent project, A Fidai Film, premiered at the Visions du Réel International Film Festival.

The Rendez-Vous de l’Institut Series is generously supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. You will find a full calendar of the Fellows’ Talks.
